THE UGLY SIDE
OF DEMOCRACY
Many countries accept democracy as the best form of governance. Freedom of expression and protection of human rights are considered a desirable outcome of the “government of, by, and for the people.” An ugly by-product, however, is the untold damage it wreaks on holistic education.
Where the kratia or kratos (authority) of the demos (people) ejects God’s authority from home or school, the acclaimed democratic system uproots the essence of education in an increasingly secular society. Who cares?

Indonesian democracy needs Pancasila to prevent people committing injustices and destroying national unity for the sake of democracy. This is the view of the newly appointed Vice Minister of National Education, Dr. Fasli Jalal. The vice minister also believes that education authorities and practitioners both have a lot to do in terms of spotting and developing young talent.
